| Dear
Utah Masters Swimmers:
As Chairman for the upcoming swimming season, I have taken time to reflect on the current and past status of the Utah Masters Swimming (UMS) program. Prior leadership of the program helped take UMS from its infancy to the viable program we now all enjoy. Past Chairs include Annette Dunson, Michael Makarczyk, Tom Eiche, Priscilla Kawakami, and Will Reeves. These past Chairs, along with many other dedicated individuals, have devoted much time, energy, and thought so that we all are now able to participate in a viable UMS program.
Looking forward, I hope to perpetuate the momentum developed by my predecessors. In addition, I hope to increase participation in the UMS program. Our current Board has taken and will take further actions to broaden our base geographically, by age, and ability. To realize this goal, we have scheduled meets in locations such as Provo and Park City, and have added Board members to reflect a diverse group of swimmers. We will also increase the communications to swimmers by sending regular newsletters and developing a UMS Web site.
The upcoming season will provide Utah swimmers of all abilities many opportunities to compete for fun. Please call or email me if you have any comments or suggestions. I hope to see you all at the meets.
Sincerely,
Mori Paulsen

SWIM CLINIC
by Lo Knapp
Twenty-two swimmers participated in a swim clinic 9/24-9/26 at the Steiner Pool. Peak Performance put on the clinic which focused mostly on stroke technique, but also included instructions on a dry-land stretching program, starts, turns and drills. Ever swim one-arm freestyle with the pull buoy in your armpit and that arm at your side? We did, and it forced us to roll.
We got pretty water logged as 2-3 hours was spent on each stroke, but everyone maintained good interest--after all, we paid money to be there! I bet we Utah Masters sure impressed the coaches: when we were asked if we knew the significance of the "T" at the end of the lane, Doug Smith pipes up, "Enough time for 2 quick ones?" On thing we learned was the importance of kicking.
It is one way to increase the intensity of the workout and, of course, a strong kick will make one that much faster. On the last day, we warmed up with a 400, just keeping a steady kick and breathing to our weak side. Wow, did that get the heart rate up! We vowed to be better about doing drills in practice (hear that, coaches?) and to be receptive to stroke instruction.
Everyone was videotaped at the end of the clinic, both on top and below water and we received a critique of our stroke. Even if you have seen yourself swim before, it is still pretty amazing to find out you only have a 4 beat kick, or that you breathe way too late, or that your hand is enters the water in a totally wrong, weird way! We all hope to see faster times this year!
