November 1999

Dear Utah Masters Swimmers:
The October swim meet was great. The Biathlon was a big success with 19 entrants. Mark Alvarez "blazed" through the run in a time of 12:45 finishing first overall with a total time of 23:27. (That's just over 5 minutes per mile on the run. Wow!) Robynn Masters finished first among the women and second overall with a time of 25:14. (Looks like someone needs to work on her running.) Rob and Julie Bills experienced "road rage" first hand when they tried to run a car off the road. The Short-course Meters meet ran smoothly with many swimmers enduring 85+ degree water temperatures. Matt Walters, providing his best imitation of Iron Will Reeves, swam a number of difficult events including the 400 IM and 200 Breaststroke after logging a 4500 yard workout earlier in the day. (What a show-off.)
In November, we will conduct a Pentathlon. This meet will give you a change to swim a 50, 100 or 200 of every stroke along with a 100, 200 or 400 IM. Swimmers who wish to swim a single event or a mixture of the events listed without completing the Pentathlon are welcome to participate. If you can't make the meet, and still wish to participate in the nationally recognized "Postal" event, you can make arrangements to swim on your own during a workout or another sanctioned time and enter your results. This is always a fun event that allows you to test your versatility and gauge the progress you are making in the strokes that challenge you the most. I think Utah Masters had four or five National Champions in this event last year.

If you haven't yet checked out our Web site, you are missing out. This is a must see. Gary Shaw and Matt Walters have done a fabulous job putting it together...and they aren't done yet. Check it out at www.utahmasters.org, you will be impressed.
Hope to see you Saturday, the 20th.
Sincerely,
Mori Paulsen
