Masters Short Course Nationals--Santa Clara
May 17-20, 2001

The 18 Utah swimmers swam fast, had fun and learned a few lessons during the national meet this year. The combined score placed Utah 4th of 144 teams.

Coach David ("Kelp") McGlynn did a fine job of recording splits, walking up and down the bleacher steps every hour to get the heat sheets, organizing evening dinners and taking advantage of the free lunches for coaches. David learned that if you don't check in by the deadline, they won't let you swim, even if you are seated first in the 1000 free by more than a minute. After discussion, he was allowed to swim the 1650 instead, but only for time and not for team points. David's 1000 split would have won first place for his age group--just wait for those top 10 times to come out this Fall!

Lo Knapp, authored this original article without any mention of herself - so I will! Lo is one of Utah's most consistent, winningest USMS national competitors ever and this year was no exception! Five first place finishes! They were: 50, 100, and 200 breastrokes, and the 200 and 400 Individual Medleys. Way to go Lo!

Tom Thorum and Jon Frolich learned to not assume that the women always swim first. While eating breakfast, their heats swam without them. Why were our swimmers missing their best events?!?! On the brighter side, for the first time in many nationals, Utah had no false starts/ DQs in the relays. This was attributed primarily to the absence of Eric Hansen and Robynn Masters.

Many swimmers had to work hard to get to and get through this meet. Betsy Watkins swam Thursday and Friday morning, flew to Portland for a meeting, then returned to swim Sunday's events. Doug Smith and Gary Shaw also participated in partial days due to commitments. They also switched places this year, with Gary swimming distance events and Doug sprinting only. Erik ("Vivarin")

Crankshaw came all the way from North Carolina to swim for Utah and cranked out great swims. Lisa Kuwahara experimented with the "Paris Taper" and found it helpful as she did her Master's best in the 100 and 200 breaststroke. Now we all have to go to Europe two weeks before nationals! We also had swimmers with injuries: Richard Kittle, Scott Shields and Chris Brady all had nagging injuries that almost prevented each of them from swimming. However, their bodies cooperated at the last moment and they each had spectacular swims.

David finally got his chance at redemption on the last day, winning the 500 free and finally earning his National Champion patch. Now, if only he can swim a 50 free with less than 14 breaths!

Any article about the 2001 short course nationals that fails to mention the sterling, or should I say gold, performance of Horace "Bud" Knowlton is clearly incomplete.  Bud, who is one of the founders of Utah Masters
Swimming, always swims well at the big meets and this year's nationals was no exception.   He won all three backstroke distances against some very stiff competition and was second to past Olympian Graham Johnston in the
individual medley events.  Bud should be an inspiration to us all and I know that he is my hero.

The 200 fly was dedicated to Matt Walters and a heartfelt announcement was made before that event. We all thought of and remembered Matt throughout the meet. We knew he was with us. Julie Bills and Mindy Wheeler swam the 200 fly and made Matt proud. Lo Knapp swam the 400 IM for Matt and did her LTB. "I can never swim it again, because it will never feel that easy."

Consider going to a national event if you have never been. You'll experience camaraderie, a chance to swim in an optimal competitive venue and you'll be truly inspired by the level of fitness the athleticism and the healthy lifestyle of the swimmers of every age.

Hey, Doug-
We Miss You!

After ten years of coaching Master's Swimming at Steiner, Doug Fadel has, for the time being, discontinued his coaching duties. Doug has given up his Saturday mornings for those ten long years to greet master's swimmers with a smile as they staggered in with squinty eyes and bed heads. (Unless they were of the Kawakami-Oliver-Masters philosophy: those swimmers come in raring to go, having been up since 5:30 am and having drunk at least 3 cups of coffee!). Imagine the quantity of whining and complaining Doug has had to put up with during these past years!

Most of Doug's Saturday morning practices had themes and the swimmers would try to guess the next set, rather like taking an IQ test and trying to figure out the next object in a series. Practices were intricate enough that the guesses were frequently wrong.

Doug has given so much to Utah Master's Swimming besides coaching on Saturday mornings. He created QUAC, coaches for QUAC and has served on the Utah Master's Swimming board. He has coached weeknights at Steiner and has been instrumental in encouraging swimmers to attend meets.

Sometimes we swimmers forget to appreciate all the effort that our coaches put in for us. To all of the coaches: Thank you! To Doug: Please hurry back!
